His previous books include\u00a0<em>Parish Boundaries: The Catholic Encounter with Race in the Twentieth-Century Urban North\u00a0<\/em>(Chicago, 1996),\u00a0<em>Catholicism and American Freedom: A History<\/em>\u00a0(W. W.
